Learn to Run With Endurance

Identify Your Race

Before one can learn to run with endurance, they must first identify their race. It’s been many years since I set a goal to run my first ever 5k. I was working out in a local gym and one day I told God I would run but I didn’t know how to train. I had no idea someone would bring a program called Run for God to our church. Then, I was obligated to follow through with my commitment. I signed up and twelve weeks later I claimed my victory! I identified my race and took advantage of a program to help me accomplish my goal.

The Track of Life

We may not step on a track and train to become a professional athlete, but we do step on the track of life everyday. This is where we learn to identify our race. Whether single, married, in school, working, with family, empty nester, healthy or sick, you set out each day to run your race. It is here we discover our daily lives have many obstacles, hills, mountains, injuries, heartaches and battles to maneuver around and plow through. Some days are like sprints. We run as fast as we can to get done as much as we can. Other times are like running a marathon. On these days we need to slow our pace so we can endure for the long haul. Sometimes we run a relay and pass the torch when we get tired or sick. Sometimes we run alone feeling the burn through every part of our body and we long for someone to pass the torch to. Whatever our lot or our race, we are given specific instructions to show us how to run to stay the course and reach the finish line!

Renew Your Mind

“And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God.” Romans 12:2 NKJV

You set out to run your race and you want to know what is important to finish the course. Paul tell us in this verse to get our mind off the world and focus it on God above and His ways and then you will know His perfect will for your life. If you are married, look to God’s plan for marriage and not the reality show on TV for a healthy marriage. If you are working, look to God’s plan on how to be a good employee and then set your mind to accomplish that each day instead of listening to a coworker who is negative about everything on the job. Trade your thoughts for the thoughts of God and then set your mind to do what God says daily and you will began to see a change in your attitude and others will notice it as well.

Work at It

“Whatever your hand finds to do, do it with your might…” Ecclesiastes 9:10 NKJV

Believe God has a plan and a promise for you and whatever that may be, He will bring it to pass. However, keep in mind, God works on His time and many days will be filled with tasks that seem mundane at the least. These days it’s easy to loose our focus and want to give up. Don’t. Everything serves a purpose and we are always being prepared for the next journey God has for us and in His school of training, He gets to say when we graduate. It is now we set our pace and do whatever is in front of us to do wholeheartedly unto Him. Set your mind to trust daily, pray daily and serve daily.

Seek Godly Counsel

“A wise man will hear and increase learning, and a man of understanding will attain wise counsel.” Proverbs 1:5 NKJV

One reason I believe Run for God is so successful in training people like me to run, is because they bring in others who have already accomplished their goal and have already run their race. They speak and teach others the ups and downs through the training process. Their wisdom brings hope to those who want to run whatever their current status may be. They also bring in experts who help runners pick the right shoes and other running items they may need to help avoid injuries. Beginners also run with others who are where they are so they lean on and encourage one another. This is important as well. We need those with experience but we also need those who understand where we are. Find a support group or a couple of good Christian, Godly women, or men to confess and to pray with through your low moments and praise together on your mountain tops. Praise is important also.

Give Yourself Room To Fall

“ Therefore humble yourselves under the mighty hand of God, that He May exalt you in due time.” 1st Peter 5:6

Even in our best efforts, we will fall short of the glory of God. We will have those moments when we stumble and fall, but rest assured God will be there with His amazing grace to pick us up and dust us off so that we keep our eyes on Him and keep putting off everything that would want to cause us to look back as long as we remain humble. There is only one way to go with Jesus and that is forward, one step at a time.

Putting these things into practice won’t make you perfect or strong or keep you from stumbling, but, it will help you to become focused, equipped and give you a better perspective of what it means to run with endurance. We will never achieve the prize this side of eternity and that’s okay because we aren’t called to do that. We are simply called to run as one who will win. Remember we won’t cross the finish line until we are called to take our heavenly flight, so dig in and pace yourself for the marathon, sprint when you can and relay when necessary. See you at the finish line! God bless.
